Since 1919, Americans have observed November 11 as a day to honor the sacrifices of those who have fought for freedom. Originally called Armistice Day, President Wilson first declared November 11 a day of remembrance following the end of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I on November 11, 1918.

President Wilson set the tone of observance with the following words, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations..."

Following World War II, President Eisenhower renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day, expanding the day of memory to commemorate the sacrifices of all those who have served their country. Each November we celebrate the legacy of freedom our nation’s heroes have created.
